Noteworthy Philadelphia Boat Accidents in Recent Years

SSGBS Boat Accident

Philadelphia and the surrounding areas provide access to a substantial network of waterways. Thus, it’s no surprise that various forms of boating are fairly popular activities in and around Philadelphia.

Unfortunately, this means that Philadelphia area boat accidents can and sometimes do occur. The following are just a few noteworthy examples of such accidents from Philadelphia’s recent past:

July 7, 2010: Duck Boat Accident

Duck boats are vehicles that can function both as boats and motor vehicles. In cities like Philadelphia, they offer tourists a unique opportunity to explore the city both from the land and the water.

On July 7, 2010, one of these boats was anchored in the Delaware River due to mechanical issues. A barge pushed by a tugboat collided with the duck boat, tragically resulting in two deaths. An investigation determined the tugboat’s operator failed to spot the duck boat in their path because they had been distracted by their phone and computer.

September 1, 2018: Tacony-Palmyra Bridge Incident

It is very important for those operating any type of boat to have the necessary experience. They must also be familiar with the waterways they’re navigating.

Lack of experience and familiarity with the area both played a role in an accident that occurred on September 1, 2018, when a powerboat struck one of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge’s piers. Although no one lost their life, the passengers did sustain injuries.

May 15, 2015: Schuylkill River Rowing Accident

A rowing team from St. Joseph’s University and a separate team from Temple University were both practicing on the Schuylkill River on the morning of May 15, 2015. Their boats struck one another, resulting in injury to several of the rowers from both teams.

Poor visibility is believed to have contributed to the accident. Additionally, the two teams may not have properly communicated with one another, resulting in a collision.

Guarding Against Philadelphia Boat Accidents

There are various steps you can take to minimize your chances of being harmed when taking a boat out on one of the waterways in or around Philadelphia. They include (but aren’t necessarily limited to) the following:

  • Confirming the operator of the boat is thoroughly familiar with the area, has the proper experience, is not intoxicated, and understands the relevant laws.
  • Confirming the boat is equipped with proper safety gear.
  • Accounting for weather conditions and visibility, and potentially opting not to proceed with an excursion if conditions may be hazardous.
  • Avoiding congested areas.
  • Not overloading a boat with too many passengers or too much equipment.
  • Ensuring a boat has been properly maintained and is in good condition before taking it out.
  • Maintaining a safe speed and ensuring at least one person is looking out for potential hazards at all times.

That said, even if you’re cautious, you may one day be harmed in a boat accident if someone else is careless.
